Weekly Message 10/9 - 10/13

Hello Room 24 Parents and Students,
This week is Parent Conference week. A notice will be sent home with your child on Monday to remind you when your conference appointment is scheduled. Monday's homework is for your child to hold a Student-Parent conference with you, using the progress report being sent home, so that you can get a general idea of how they're doing. That way you can come to your scheduled appointment with any questions or suggestions that you have about how we might best work together to help your child succeed. As part of their homework, students are also being asked to fill out and return the reflection sheet attached to the progress report. It is important that students reflect on their own progress and how they might meet their 4th grade goals.
This week will be full of excitement! On Monday students will attend our book fair preview. On Tuesday our school will be visited by Google staff who will be coming into our classrooms to show students and teachers how to use Google Expeditions, a virtual reality program that allows students to take virtual field trips. Also on Tuesday, we will be having our movie/PJ/ice cream sundae party, our class's reward for earning 150 class points. On Wednesday we will make our first trip to our school's Innovation Lab, learning some basics about programming. Friday will be a minimum day, with the school day ending at 1:05.
Thank you to everyone who participated in/made donations for our Math-a-thon. Students took the Math-a-thon test last Friday. It was long, but our students hung in there, and everyone who was present completed the test. Those who turned in a sponsor sheet will have the sponsor sheet and test returned to them on Monday. We still welcome any sponsor sheets that have not yet been turned in. Every dollar helps get us on our field trips!

Weekly Message 10/2 - 10/6

Hello Room 24 Parents and Students,
This is the week of our Math-a-Thon! This Friday, Birney 4th graders will be taking the math-a-thon test in an effort to raise money to cover the cost of field trips. Students will be working on 50 problems that address material covered in Chapter 1 of our math program. Math-a-Thon sponsor sheets should be turned in Friday if they are ready to go. Wish us luck!
This week students will also be revising, editing, and publishing their personal narratives and finishing up their region slide shows. They will be working with the standard algorithm (the old-fashion way) for multiplication. We will also continue reading and working with the novel Shiloh. We will discuss the importance of being good digital citizens with the Common Sense program.
