Weekly Message 4/23 - 4/27

Hello Room 24 Students and Parents,
This is the week of our field trip! This Thursday we will be going to the San Gabriel Mission and Olvera Street. Students should arrive at school by 8:00 that day, as our bus will be leaving around 8:10. Please remember to bring lunch/spending money. We should return around 3:00, traffic permitting.
This is also the week when students should be prepared to share the poems they've selected with the rest of the class. We will begin with presentations on Monday, and have 7-8 students present each day.
We will have no math homework this week, as we will be closing out our chapter on angles and our unit on geometry. We will have assignments Monday through Wednesday, but not on Thursday.
Aside from closing out our geometry unit and presenting our poems, we will also begin doing a bit of test prep. State testing is coming up in May, so we will be reviewing concepts and test taking strategies over the next few weeks.

Monday, 4/23 - College T-shirt Day
Wednesday, 4/25 - Character Counts Day (wear yellow for Respect)/Modified Day
Thursday, 4/26 - San Gabriel Mission/Olvera Street field trip (arrive at school at 8:00)
Friday, 4/27 - Birney Pride Day (wear Birney shirt or Birney blue)

Weekly Message 4/16 - 4/20

Hello Room 24 Parents and Students,
This Monday a field trip slip will be going home for our trip to the San Gabriel Mission/Olvera Street next week. The trip is coming up next Thursday.
This week we will continue experimenting with different types of poetry. Our students, once hesitant at trying their hand at poetry writing, are really digging in and creating some interesting work. Remind your child to share what they have created with you (on their Google Classroom account). We will also be working with angles in math. We will not have math homework this week, as students will be getting plenty of practice in class with using protractors to draw and measure angles. Students will also be completing their packets on the San Gabriel Mission in preparation for our trip.
Please be sure that your child is practicing the poem that they have chosen to share with the class daily. Students will be presenting next week.

Important Upcoming Dates:
Monday, 4/16 - College T-shirt Day
Wednesday, 4/18 - Character Counts Day (wear yellow for Respect)/Modified Day
Friday, 4/20 - Birney Pride Day (wear Birney shirts or Birney blue)

Weekly Message 4/9 - 4/13

Hello Room 24 Students and Parents,
This week we will be continuing our work with poetry: reading and hearing examples, discussing music as poetry, and beginning to experiment with writing poetry of our own. In math we will continue our unit on geometry. We will also continue learning about the San Gabriel Mission, in preparation for our field trip.
Mr. Mais's class has decided to join us on our field trip to the San Gabriel Mission/Olvera Street. Being able to share the cost of the bus with another class will make this field trip much more accessible. Please send in any donations that you have gathered for our fundraiser by this Friday, so that we can know where we stand. We appreciate your support!
